Patreon is a subscription-based membership platform that allows people to support their favorite content creators.
I use Patreon to interact with subscribers in a way that builds the Familiar community. It also allows me to easily create and distribute rewards.
However, Patreon’s built-in landing page can be difficult to read and understand, so I created this separate page to go more in-depth into the subscription model I use, the payment tiers that are available, and what perks, rewards, and exclusive Familiar content is available if you choose to become a member.

Note: The $1 tip jar tier was retired in 2021. Tip jar tier subscribers are not eligible for the thank you credit or in-progress content.

frequently asked questions
what is "charge up front" in terms of Patreon?
I use a monthly “charge up front” model for Patreon, which means that no matter when you subscribe within the month, you will be charged the full monthly rate. For example, whether you subscribe on March 5 or March 25, you will still be charged the same monthly rate for the tier you are signing up for. This is because once you are a member, you have instant access to all of the previously posted content dating back to 2019. I also schedule Influencer polls and calendar polls so they close near the end of the month; this ensures late subscribers still have a chance to vote in the polls. (note that the calendar poll closes a few days before the end of the month so I have time to draw the calendar before the first of the following month)
At present, the only content you may end up paying for but miss is a live stream event, which typically occurs on the third Saturday of the month. If this is critical to you, I recommend waiting until the beginning of the month to subscribe, for the full experience.

These are usually great topics for group conversation in the Discord server. We have dedicated channels to discuss this kind of thing, and there are a lot of people who are interested in chatting about this kind of stuff.

Generally, our policy is if you’re not sure, then don’t. Start by reading the rules. If you are still not sure, you can ask me or one of the mods.

We also have channels for this kind of conversation in the server. I and the mods do our best to promote a safe, educational space where people can learn and discuss without being inundated with horny DMs and unsolicited genital pics. When you are asking questions about concepts which affect people’s real lives, remember that you will get the best results it you remain respectful, ask your questions in earnest, and truly listen to the responses you receive.

what is a "pub month" and an "off month"?
Familiar traditionally is published one chapter every other month. A “pub month” (or “on month”) is a month in which a new chapter will be published. An “off month” is the month in between pub months, when no new chapter is published.
how do you use the funds you receive from Patrons?
I use the money from Patreon to pay my bills. This means you are literally helping put a roof over my head and food on my table so I can be alive. More Patreon funds means I can allocate more of my work day to producing the comic!
where do you host your streams?
I currently host all streams directly on the Discord server.
what is Discord? what is the Familiar server like?
Discord is a community chat program. You can learn more about it here.
I maintain a Familiar-centric Discord server where community members can chat about Familiar, ask questions about the comic, share and discuss relevant content, and so on. It is meant to be an adults-only, LGBTQIA+ inclusive, anti-racist, sex-positive, kink-friendly community, and the mod team strives to keep it that way. Our community is relatively diverse (given the niche topic that brings it together), and our mod team is international, entirely queer-identified, and includes people of color (including myself).
Although the Familiar comic is erotic in nature, consent and control of content is paramount within our community, and so we have a very limited policy when it comes to non-Familiar sexual content being posted to the server. The server is not NOT a place to post or view nudes or pornography, find hookups, or ERP.
I can't figure out how to get on the Discord Server!
In order to get access to the Discord server, you will need to connect your Patreon account to your Discord account. This link explains how to do that. If you are still having trouble, please DM me or Patreon support for more assistance.
do you post exclusive content to the server? am I missing anything by not joining?
Patreon’s Discord API is notoriously bad, so I do not currently post exclusive content to Discord – with the exception that my art streams occur there. The only exclusive experience aside from art streams that you may be missing by not joining the server is conversation.
how do I get my +1 Discord set up for my friend?
This isn’t something supported automatically by Patreon at the moment, so please send me a DM either on Discord or Patreon and I will send you an invite for your friend.
Please also note that the +1 Discord access only gives your +1 access to the server, at the level you are subscribed. They will not have access to Patreon or any of the Patreon perks directly via Patreon. However, you are welcome to share Patrons-only content directly with your +1 through DMs, etc.
I signed up but don't see my name in the credits! why not?
Credits in Familiar are for the chapter I am working on during the month the subscription is for, and I am typically working 4-6 months ahead. That means, for example, if you joined Patreon in August 2020, your first credit will appear in 09 WICK, which I was finishing in August — but which will not be published until March 2021. The credit period for each chapter is listed on the chapter’s landing page below the publication date.
As of June, 2021 (2X PLEASE), I have begun collecting credits in a Google survey as an opt-in perk. I distribute the link to this form at the beginning of the month. You only need to opt-in once per chapter.
